Castro's dead. Well, he's not dead yet. But the news today is that he is gravely ill. This has set off celebrations in Miami. Many today don't understand why others would celebrate someone's demise. That is because they do not understand the evils of Communism and the tyranny this man has forced Cubans to live under for nearly a half a century. Nor do they understand our Founding Fathers' views on tyrants.
The report says the dictator handed over control of the country to his younger brother Raul, who's 75, because Castro's experiencing: a "sharp intestinal crisis with sustained bleeding." Now, I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty sure you never want to have a crisis anywhere near your intestines, much less a sharp crisis.
The story had a picture of some classic Communist propaganda that is up in Cuba today:
"We are doing fine"--fine indeed. But it brings to mind Margaret Thatcher's ever-useful saying: "If you must tell someone you are a lady, you're not."
The dictator doth protest too much, methinks. But that's just speculation on my part, we'll see. We will also see what the future holds for Cuba. I have a friend who recently married a Cuban woman, and waited over a year to be reunited with his new bride, because of immigration--and Cuban corruption--issues. He's been there many times, and reports that the people are generally wonderful, but Castro is evil. Hopefully, this marks a new, liberating, chapter in their history.
The U.S. is poised to help them, no matter what the future holds:
On Monday, before Castro's illness was announced, President Bush was in Miami and spoke of the island's future.
"If Fidel Castro were to move on because of natural causes, we've got a plan in place to help the people of Cuba understand there's a better way than the system in which they've been living under," he told WAQI-AM Radio Mambi, a Spanish-language radio station. "No one knows when Fidel Castro will move on. In my judgment, that's the work of the Almighty."
But there is some concern that Raul Castro, who's now in charge, is even more radical than Fidel:
"Raul is far less charismatic than his brother though far more radical."
"Though far more radical"?!? That's disturbing. It was, after all, Raul that brought us the Cuban missile crisis.
This might be a good time to say a prayer for the people of Cuba.

PS Port McClellan has posted on this story here and MBMc also posted at The Remedy. What's the word on the street from our South Florida readers? Please comment!
The word on the street...
This is an update from the muggy trenches of South Florida. Obviously, this is breaking news and naturally people are all a twitter. Even more so in my current work environment, the bubbling cauldron of gossip that is a hair salon.
Rumors have it that many Cuban-Americans in South Florida are receiving a plethora of phone calls from friends/relatives in the motherland. Most intriguing... Also, it has been noted by many that the footage that the media is using of good ol' Fidel and Raul is dated by at least 15 years. Also intriguing... Ergo, it is held by many here that our infamous gray-bearded and iron-fisted hero has already kicked the proverbial bucket. Funny, I can't hear the sounds of mourning...
Given the nature of said rumors, I can obviously not substantiate their validity, though they do provide wonderful gossip fodder.
Thus far, the word on the street.

TM,
There are plenty of people around here in South Florida that play the part of the "Customer" in that "Grrrraaaiil" scene you linked to, and long for the appearance of just such a "Cart Master".

Mr. Magnus,
It seems one more quote, a favorite if I recall rightly, is also fitting here:
"Please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Let's not bicker and argue over who killed who."

Or, how 'bout -
Black Night: I'm invincible.
Arthur: You're a looney.

Am I the looney, or Castro?
