In the last week there have been three school shootings. Five little girls killed in the last one yesterday in Lancaster County PA.
Authorities were quoted in the above article saying this, "He...apparently thought he could succeed at the lightly guarded school house."
Two questions. 1) Why don't we see these awful crimes take place in police stations? Why is it always schools or the post office?
2) Does it have anything to do with places being lightly guarded?

Maybe it has less to do with the location and more to do with the targets. Children are the easiest targets-the most vunerable and the most easily scared. So in a school, these guys (the gunmen) can feel powerful and in control.

Perhaps it's just that Amish are living in a different world, removed from his. What struck me was that he dropped his kids off at their school, then committed the crimes. Any "normal" and modern school would be quite similar to where his own children and their friends were the very moment he did these horrible things.

Erin and Philomena,
Good points. As a school teacher, responsible for children I know that ultimately I don't have the ability to keep safe - these incidents always strike very close to home.
When I taught in Los Angeles no one thought twice about having armed police officers on campus. Are we to that point for all schools?
